‘Sew Torn’ gives Calum Worthy a crash course in bad choices

Who knew sewing and crime solving were a match Sew Torn a the greater part unique Swiss-set thriller stitches a series of seamless connections as its beleaguered seamstress heroine Barbara Duggen Eve Connolly schemes to keep her fabric shop from closing As she travels to replace a missing button for a client on her wedding day Barbara stumbles on a drug deal gone bad on a deserted road littered with not one but two downed motorcyclists guns and a briefcase She has three options Commit the perfect crime call the police or drive away What makes Sew Torn yes the title is a pun so atypical is we see the deadly confrontations that follow each choice as Barbara repeatedly uses her needle and thread to free herself All the elaborate escapes and clever twists that effect from Barbara s sewing skills were filmed as they really happened on set No digital sorcery was added months later Calum Worthy is Joshua one of the two crashed motorcyclists who is destined not to have a happy day Joshua is going through a lot Worthy commented in a Zoom interview I don t want to spoil anything but one of the big mysteries in the story is How did he get there And what s he trying to get away from Because he s fearful he s nervous and he feels doomed What was so fascinating is how the story is split up into these different segments It s almost like multiple short films all within this one narrative story You get a little bit of a piece of each one Once you finish each chapter then you learn a little bit more about each character So at last you understand how all the puzzle pieces come together because it really is a puzzle For Joshua his journey s sprinkled throughout each of those three stories and you learn a little bit more each time So each story reflects on the other one as a different viewpoint In each scene perspective changes which is really the theme This idea of choices and how one choice can influence another and can take your life in a altogether different journey How life can present you with possibilities and each possibility could take you to a wild adventure Or you could just ignore it and walk away The thing that makes this a strong story is its characters making strong choices I think a movie that thematically addresses choices was a strong story choice in itself As for Worthy s sewing skills The answer is majority emphatically None If I had to sew I would have ruined the film Sew Torn opens in theaters Friday A seamstress comes across two motorcyclists lying in the road in a scene from Sew Torn Sunrise Films
